A New Approach to Modeling Early Warning Systems for Currency Crises : can a machine-learning fuzzy expert system predict the currency crises effectively?

چکیده
This paper presents a hybrid model for predicting the occurrence of currency crises by using the neuro fuzzy modeling approach. The model integrates the learning abil i ty of neural network with the inference mechanism of fuzzy logic . The empirical results show that the proposed neuro fuzzy model leads to a better prediction of crisis . Significantly, the model can also construct a rel iable causal relationship among the variables through the obtained knowledge base. Compared to the tradit ionally used techniques such as logit , the proposed model can thus lead to a somewhat more prescriptive modeling approach towards finding ways to prevent currency crises.

Modelliing of Earlly Warniing Indiicators of Currency Crisis: Emphasizing the Evaluation of the Relationship Between Currency Crisis and Capital Control Index
Predicting currency fluctuations and crises is an important step in the foreign exchange policy of countries. Given that the purpose of early warning systems or patterns is to anticipate crises, their use is essential to prevent economic crises, including currency crises. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to model and rank the early warning factors of currency crisis by Bayesian averaging...

Can we improve forecasts of currency crises by using a large number of predictors? Which economic variables are most important to predict currency crises? This paper evaluates the performance of traditional Leading Indicators and a new Diffusion Index (DI) method as Early Warning Systems to monitor the risk and forecast the likelihood of the recent currency crises in East-Asia. We find that, re...

In this paper we develop an early warning system of currency crises based on the Markov switching methodology. Constructed data on speculative pressure from six Asian countries indicate that currency crises are mainly captured through volatility effects. Based on an extensive survey, we test potential determinants of exiting the tranquil state and find a number of variables with significant med...
متن کاملHow do Sudden Stops of Capital Flows Affect Currency Crises in Asia?
Sudden stops can be characterized by sharp reversals in capital inflows, large declines in output, and steep collapses in real asset prices (Mendoza and Smith, 2009). In almost all recent crises, capital account reversals amounting to more than 10% of an afflicted country’s GDP have occurred (Calvo and Reinhart, 1999 and Nabli, 1999). More specifically, reversals in capital flows to emergin...

financial markets over the last decade, large capital flow reversals can occur quite quickly, considerably shortening the time policymakers have to respond. As a consequence, and motivated in part by the recent crises in Europe (1992), Mexico (1994–95), and Asia (1997–98), researchers are taking a fresh look at the determinants of currency and banking crises and are attempting to develop early ...
